27. UNDER THE SUN
This magnificently colored sky seen from El Viejo Wetlands Wildlife Refuge in Guanacaste is the result of the sun’s rays being atmospherically filtered. When the sun is low in the sky, light enters the atmosphere at a lower angle, so it must pass through more air before being seen by an observer. The shorter wavelengths of blue and violet light penetrate poorly, but the longer wavelengths of yellow, orange, and red reach the observer’s eye. Such skies are an almost daily occurence over Guanacaste during the dry season from December to April.
